Christian Lawhead has played both singles and doubles matches during his time on the Seymour High School tennis team.
When it came to making a choice, he said he prefers playing as a tandem.
“I liked having a partner to talk to,” Lawhead said. “Communication is a very important aspect of doubles, mainly for just knowing what you can actually handle.
Sometimes if you just know for a fact you can’t get a shot, you have to let your partner know so they’re not expecting anything more from you.”
Lawhead says he feels more comfortable playing back.
“I like the baseline. I like to see the whole court and try to place my shots,” he said. “I think my right hand, my right side is probably my stronger side. On a good day I can get from one end of the court to the other.”
On the schedule, Lawhead looked forward to home matches.
“I really like our new courts,” Lawhead said. “We had to play on the old courts for three years. If it hit a crack, you couldn’t hit that ball any more, so I really like them. They are nice and stable and they look really nice.”
Lawhead said he began playing tennis in seventh grade.
“I had lessons in sixth grade and I joined the team in seventh grade,” he said. Lawhead then continued to play all four years in high school.
He said staying positive is important in tennis.
“You have to have the right attitude to play sports,” Lawhead said. “If you don’t, nothing is ever going to work for you and it’s going to ruin the whole sport for you.”
Lawhead has enjoyed attending SHS.
“I like the people I’ve met,” Lawhead said. “These teachers are good educators and know how to teach their students. I like this school. I’ll probably remember the friends I’ve made.
I really like the people here a lot. They’re very nice. I’ve really enjoyed being part of the Seymour tennis program and I hope to continue playing tennis through college.”
He plays in the band and said, “I really like cheering on the sports teams. I think it’s good to show school spirit.”
