Seymour senior has enjoyed time on links

Alexia York played golf with her father (Wesley) a few times prior to her entering Seymour High School, and she enjoyed the experience.

Now, she is wrapping up a four-year career with the Owls.

“I thought it would be fun to do,” she said. “I really enjoy it. “I try to set a goal for myself on each hole. If my last hole was a bad hole I just try to forget about it and try to focus on the next hole.”

York said she has good distance and accuracy with her drives.

“I’d say I’m pretty good at getting down the course,"she said. "I can get down there in three, regulation, but my short game is what I struggle with. My putting is typically decent. The most I ever putt is typically a three-putt.”

She said her best nine-hole score during the season was a 58, and she scored a 49 out of season.

York said she prefers nine-hole matches over 18s.

The sectional was played Saturday at Otis Park in Bedford.

“I like the course. I like if I drive well it’s going to go far because there are hills,"she said "Shadowood is very flat so it’s harder to get distance, but there if you hit a really hard drive it may go further because it will hit a hill and it will roll unlike Shadowood.

“I think Otis Park is very pretty. I like the trees, the hills and all the scenery.”

York said you have to adjust to the weather conditions.

“Wind doesn’t seem to affect my shots, but if there is a strong gust of wind it will pull my shots to the right or to the left, but typically it doesn’t,"she said. "When it’s really hot I don’t eat as much, so I don’t feel as groggy and full. But when it’s colder I try to make sure I get a meal in before so I have the energy go get through the match.

“I always go to the practice greens before (playing) if we’re doing something in the mornings so I can tell if they’re going to be fast or if they are going to be slow, and then I adjust according to that.”

York said she has enjoyed the away matches and being with her friends on the bus.

“The bus trips are fun," she said. "My highlight is that I’ve gotten to go to most of the away meets. The past two years I’ve had some issues, and I haven’t gotten to go to the away meets because I wasn’t eligible, or I had to miss matches because of band and I couldn’t qualify to go play.”

The senior feels that it is important to have a strong mental approach to all sports.

You always want to have a good attitude," York said.

York said she has enjoyed attending SHS.

“I like the different things you can do like the different clubs, like Latin Club and different things like that. I like that I can talk to my friends and I like the power hour, and I like the SRT time because it’s like power hour but you get more work done," she said.

“I’m probably going to remember everything at school. I’ve had good experiences all around.”
