Medora senior returns to volleyball program for final season

Morgan Dunn said she is playing volleyball at Medora this fall for two reasons: She missed playing last season, and she wanted to set a good example for the younger girls.

She played volleyball her freshman and sophomore years, but did not participate last season.

“Since it was my senior year I just felt like ‘why not, I might as well’, and I wanted to encourage other girls to play, too. I’m glad I came out this year,” Dunn said.

Dunn was a setter her sophomore year and is again this season.

“You always get the second ball so you have to set it up and you know where you want the ball to go,” Dunn said. “You know who you want to hit the ball, and who you think would be best to hit it and what would be the best move to make.”

She said it takes teamwork to make a good play.

“Communication is really important because if you don’t tell your teammates what’s going on, because they’re so caught up in what they’re doing, they’re not going to know. If you don’t tell your hitter ‘they have two blockers,’ they don’t know to hit around the blockers or to tip it,” she said. “You always have to talk and call the ball.”

On the schedule, Dunn looks forward to home contests.

“The home matches are always the best because we have a lot of support here and there is always a lot of fans because when we go away we don’t have anybody come to cheer us on,” Dunn said.

The Hornets played in a tournament at Henryville last Saturday, and will play in the Southern Roads Conference Tournament at Union Dugger Sept. 29, and Dunn said she looks forward to playing in the conference.

“The conference games are our goals,” Dunn said. “We’ve already won three conference games. We’d like to win the tournament and have a banner. We have to get momentum going and carry it into the next game and keep our head up and just do the basic talking, communicating.”

Dunn said the mental part of sports is key.

“If you don’t come to the game mentally you can’t play,” Dunn said. “You have to forget about your mistakes, and just set yourself forward for the next point.”

Missy Stewart moved up from junior varsity coach to head coach this fall.

Dunn is one of the captains this fall.

“The seniors try to help the underclassmen and give them insight on what to do,” Dunn said.

She said she is glad she has attended MHS.

“The thing I enjoy the most about Medora is the teachers,” Dunn said. “You can get the help that you need. Obviously, it’s a small community but the teachers have time to spend one-on-one with you if you need it. They don’t mind helping you if you need extra help.

“I’ll remember all the friends I’ve made and different people I’ve met. I’ll most definitely remember volleyball because I enjoy it. It’s been a great year so far.”
