Seymour softball player has enjoyed time on diamond

Kalee Wall began playing softball at an early age in Seymour, and it quickly became her favorite sport.

“I enjoy every aspect of it,” she said. “Especially when I make a good play or do more than expected of me — when I do more than I thought I could do. I started with T-ball and played in all the leagues that I could.”

She said as she moved up through the leagues she started playing infield and outfield.

This spring she has spent some time at first base.

“I like first base and I’d like to pitch some time,” Wall said. “I feel like I’m a good first baseman. I’m pretty tall, and I can stretch well. I was known for stretching in T-ball pretty well.”

Wall said she can scoop up low throws when they are thrown to her, and she said at that position you have to be able to react quickly to every situation.

“We’ve got different signals that we’ve worked on in practice and utilize them in a game,” she said. “I do enjoy defense, especially when there’s action.”

The senior enjoys batting, and considers herself a contact, or ‘spray,’ hitter.

“I’m one of those people that might hit it anywhere,” Wall said. “I don’t always look for a certain pitch. If I feel like I can hit it, I hit it. In practice I do really well with line drives.”

Wall said she enjoys the practices and playing at home and her favorite away field is Floyd Central.

Practices have helped Wall develop her game.

“Practice is important for trying to get better for the games,” Wall said. “Sometimes I pitch during practice when we do live hitting. We’ve been in the barn a lot this year because of all the rain, so we’ve done a lot of hitting, and a lot of stuff indoors like fielding and throwing.

“The barn has been a big help for our hitting, but our hitting hasn’t been that great this year. We take live batting practice almost every chance we can.”

Wall said she has liked attending SHS.

“I’ve enjoyed SHS,” she said. “When I first started high school I had a group of friends that I had first met in middle school. We kind of stuck together, but then we kind of broke it off in the end. Softball is where my big group of friends is.”

She said she has played with the other seniors, Anna Bullard and Tori Snook, since T-ball.

Wall will attend Northland Community College in Minnesota and play softball there.
