Sports scholarships are available in memory of Jessica Barkman.

Barkman was a 1991 graduate of Seymour High School, where she received the most valuable player award in volleyball, basketball and track and field during her senior year. She attended Indiana State University on a volleyball scholarship.

Barkman died in a traffic accident in Texas in 1997. She is remembered and admired for her outstanding talent and strong determination. After her death, a scholarship fund was started.

The purpose of the scholarships is to financially help young girls strengthen their athletic ability by attending sports camps, playing club ball, etc. The scholarships are based on financial need, athletic ability and a coach’s recommendation.

Last year’s recipients were Kaydence Miller (Synergy Athletics All-Stars) from Immanuel Lutheran School; Carlee Robinson (Thunder fastpitch travel softball), Abbigail Schmidt (ECVB club volleyball) and Chloe Shepherd (AAU basketball), all from Seymour High School; and Cassidy Burnside (Hoosier tennis camp) from Trinity Lutheran High School.

Scholarship applications, due April 1, are available at Girls Inc. of Jackson County, 956 N. O’Brien St., Seymour, or online at girlsincjackson.org.
