Seymour had seven cracks at trying to get a wrestling state qualifier, but could not get anybody past the first round of the Evansville Reitz Semistate on Saturday.

The Owls set a school record by advancing seven wrestlers out of the regional, but Seymour coach Todd Weaver said his wrestlers didn’t wrestle their match of trying to put points on the board.

“We had lots of winnable first-round matches, and we let quite a few of them slip through our hands,” Weaver said. “We didn’t come and wrestle our best matches today, and too bad. A lot of opportunities; now, they are missed opportunities.”

Isaiah Pichardo’s season ended with a 9-2 loss to Franklin’s Jake Bechert at 106 pounds. Owen Chandler was pinned by Tyler Conley of Avon at 113, and Southridge’s Brad Springer pinned Jake Kriete at 152.

The Owls’ Zack Newton was pinned in his match against Wade Presson of Bloomington South at 160. Alejandro Sachinas lost a 10-3 decision to Tyler Tasa of Evansville North at 182.

Kevin Corrales (195) fell to Robbie Helfrich of Evansville Mater Dei. Gabe Ramirez (285) ended the day for the Owls with a loss by pin to Wyatt Kramer of Southridge.

Newton is the only senior semistate qualifier for Seymour, which means the other six will be returning to try and be in the same position next season. Weaver said there is no guarantee at the high school level that there will be a next time, but he and will do his job of trying to help give them the best shot of a semistate repeat, he said.

“We let our guys know that, ‘If you want to get past this level, obviously, we’ve got to do a lot more work,’” Weaver said. “I pointed out my coaching staff and told them, ‘There is not one guy standing here in front of you that’s not willing to do absolutely everything that you want to get you to the next level.’”
