BLOOMINGTON — It was a bittersweet Wednesday afternoon for Emma Wood and Lindsey Hume.

Seymour’s No. 1 doubles team kept itself alive in the individual girls tennis tournament, but the Owls were eliminated from the team tourney by Columbus North, 4-1, in the championship match of the Bloomington North Regional.

“We would have liked to have won this match,” Seymour coach Jennifer Miller said. “But we lost to a really high-quality team, and they’ve got the potential to go the distance.”

As was the case during the regular-season meeting between the two teams, Columbus North swept all three singles points in straight sets.

Paige Littrell was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Megan Baurle at No. 2 singles, and Madelyn Sanders triumphed at No. 3 by that same score against Seymour’s Lou-Anne Hoarau.

After Wood and Hume capped off their doubles match, a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Hannah Frey and Hannah Shoemaker, Columbus North’s No. 2 doubles team of Yijiang Zhao and Shweta Srinivasan clinched the match by defeating Katie O’Mara and Addie Rudge, 6-1, 6-2.

The final match point to be settled was at No. 1 singles, where the Owls’ Hallie Crenshaw came up short against the Bull Dogs’ Aubrey Smith, 6-2, 6-4.

Despite the defeat, Miller said she was pleased with Crenshaw’s effort Wednesday.

“I was really happy with how Hallie played at 1 singles tonight,” she said. “Aubrey is a very competitive 1 singles, and this is probably one of Hallie’s best matches this season.”

Wood, who made state in doubles a year ago, and Hume came in determined to move through Wednesday’s match quickly.

“We were really aggressive at the net,” Wood stated. “I play with (Frey and Shoemaker) at Columbus, so I kind of knew a lot about them, but I think we were just being a lot more aggressive at the net, and we were ready today. We were excited.”

Wood and Hume will be back at Bloomington North on Friday to play in the individual regional final. Columbus North advances to play in the Jasper Semistate on Saturday.
