The Brownstown Central girls tennis team closed its season Thursday by defeating Clarksville 3-2 in a Mid-Southern Conference match.

The match was rescheduled from earlier in the season and gave the Braves sole possession of sixth place in the MSC with a record of 4-5.

Brownstown’s points came from Miranda McClusky at No. 3 singles, Jordan Trowbridge and Bridget Hall at No. 1 doubles and Sydney Cockerham and Brooklyn Wingler at No. 2 doubles.

Wingler and Cockerham won by forfeit as Clarksville only had five girls on its team.

“It was kind of special,” Braves coach Erik Stangland said. “I was trying to decide on the (all) conference winners for our team. The coaches have to select and nominate those, so tonight’s match really helped because Miranda played a nice match, and she played to win. That gives her several wins in the conference that earned her that opportunity.”

McClusky earned MSC honorable mention at the team’s awards program conducted after the match in the school cafeteria. She defeated Clarksville’s Ari Hart 6-2, 6-4.

Trowbridge and Hall scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Morgan Redlein and Bethany Johnson.

“The No. 1 doubles team played so much better, and this was a good win for them, especially for Bridget being a freshman,” Stangland said. “Jordan gets to go out as a senior with a win, and Bridget comes back next year knowing what it’s like.

“For the rest of the girls, it’s a good win because it helped our season look a lot better.”

Brownstown’s Laken Reynolds battled Jennie Goodman on even terms at No. 1 singles, while it took three sets for the Braves’ Claudia Sibrel and Brooke Grizzle to settle their No. 2 singles match.

Reynolds and Goodman went to a tiebreaker in the first set, with Goodman winning 7-2 before dominating the second set 6-1.

Grizzle won the first set 7-5 before Sibrel came on strong to win the second set 6-3, but the Generals player rebounded in the third set 6-0.

“We still finished in the bottom half of the conference, and that is frustrating because we had an opportunity in two other matches and would have been as high as third place in the conference if we had gotten those wins,” Stangland said.

“We know we’re in it. We’ve just got to get over the hump, and once we get there, it will be a great thing.”

The Braves finished 6-11 overall.
