Errors prove costly for Owls in extra innings

Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh with one out, Seymour freshman Haley Mobley picked the right time to hit her first career home run.

Mobley bombed a hit over the center-field fence to force extra innings against visiting Silver Creek on Friday.

However, the home run wouldn’t be enough in the end, as an Owls throwing error from third to first base would help score the Dragons’ winning run in the eighth at 7-6.

“Haley is a good player. She has been battling through injury all spring. She stepped up there with two runners on,” Owls coach Brian Personett said. “My hat is off to her. They called a timeout to the pitcher and she came over, and I asked her, ‘Who doesn’t dream of this moment?’ She went up there and did it.”

The Owls gave up three unearned runs in the game, with two in the first and the deciding score in the eighth, behind four errors.

In the first, Silver Creek got a pair of runners on base on a reach and single by Bailey Miller.

The Dragons would score a pair of runs on an Owls fielding error and an RBI single by Hailey Dorman.

Seymour got on the boards in the bottom of the third, when freshman Hannah Kaufman followed up a double by Mobley with an RBI single to center field.

A sacrifice fly by Kami Pennington put the Dragons up 4-1 in the top of the third.

Seymour cut the deficit in the fourth with an RBI double by Tori Snook and a sacrifice RBI from McKenna Curry.

The Dragons’ Olivia Scarbrough drove a 2 RBI single in the sixth to push the lead to 6-3.

Mobley then tied the game in the seventh.

The Owls went down in order to conclude the game following the costly error.

“I told the girls that the bottom line in this game was four errors to one,” Personett said. “We hit the ball hard, but at times just right at people. There’s not much you can do about that.”

Seniors Lutisha Gregory, Avery Clark and Baylee Robinson were honored prior to the game.

The Owls (10-3) will play at the Edgewood Invitational today starting at noon against Bloomfield.

In Game 2, the Owls face Edgewood before playing a cross-pool game for final placings.

Charlestown, Bedford North Lawrence and Monrovia make up the opposing pool.
