Seymour’s tennis team beat the rain drops and Brownstown Central 4-0 on senior night on the Seymour courts Saturday.

Before the match, coach Jennifer Miller introduced senior players Emma Wood, Lindsey Hume and manager Krishna Patel, and their families, and read a list of their career highlights and told of their future plans.

Seymour’s No. 2 doubles team of Addie Rudge and Katie O’Mara put the first point in the books with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Brooklyn Wingler and Sydney Cockerham.

The No. 1 doubles team Wood and Hume quickly followed in the win column with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jordan Trowbridge and Bridget Hall.

Seymour’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, Hallie Crenshaw and Megan Baurle, also won in straight sets.

Crenshaw topped Laken Reynolds 6-0, 6-2, and Baurle was a 6-2, 6-1 winner against Claudia Sibrel.

Miller said she was pleased with the win, and complimented Baurle for her intensity.

“Megan has had two incredibly tough matches the last two nights at No. 2 singles, and to come in today and walk away with success, only giving up a couple games that’s a good for her mentally going into the conference tournament next week.

“Our doubles has continued to gain some momentum,” Miller said. “They played against some pretty tough teams this past week, and have come away giving up zero games or one game in their sets, so I’m really happy with how they look right now.”

Miranda McClusky provided the highlight for the Braves as she topped Kelli Arms 6-2 in the first set at No. 3 singles, and was leading 3-2 in the second set when the match was stopped due to rain.

Braves coach Erik Stangland said he felt like McCluskey had a good effort.

“She played pretty well,” he said of the freshman. “She’s getting more consistent and that’s what we want. She hit the ball better today than what she’s been.”

“We played OK. Seymour is a really good team. We knew it was going to be tough. The weather didn’t help us at all, either team. We played hard, we played well. Seymour’s a better team this year.”

Miller said Seymour’s lineup is set for the rest of the season.

“We’ve had to move people around and see where we’re at,” she said. “It takes a different skill set to play at doubles than it does at singles, and right now we have a combination that gives us our strongest. This is our lineup for conference tournament and for sectional.”

The Owls (10-3) will face Madison today at home in the first round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament. Seymour will play either Columbus East or Bedford North Lawrence on Wednesday.

Seymour has beaten the Cubs, Olympians and Stars.

“Hopefully, we’ll be back where we were last year,” Miller said. “We’d like to see Floyd Central in the championship again (Friday), but we’ve got to play consistently and come out and take every match seriously.”

The Braves (4-9) play Clarksville today at home for a Mid-Southern Conference match.

“We just need to be consistent,” Stangland said. “Hopefully we can get a couple of draws in the sectional so we can play some matches and see what we can do. We just want to get better for next year so we build on where we are this year.”

Trowbridge was the only senior in the varsity lineup for the Braves on Saturday.
