Randolph John “Smitty” Smith, 91, of Seymour, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2015, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born Sept. 23, 1923, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Randolph J. and Luna Reed Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. On Nov. 2, 1946, in Seymour, he married Ethel G. Albertson, who preceded him in death Jan. 5, 2002. On Nov. 27, 2003, in Seymour, he married Irene Hill, who also preceded him in death.

Smitty was a member of The Point (formerly First Church of the Nazarene). He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked at Cummins Engine Co. when he was younger. He then started Smitty’s Gulf Service in 1956, which he ran until 1963. In 1963, he started Smitty’s Transmission Service, which he owned and operated until his retirement. He was the maintenance supervisor for the Seymour Wastewater Treatment Plant. He was a member of Seymour Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing every chance he got, and he was a member of Hoosier Hackers traveling golf league. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time.

Survivors include his children, Randolph “Randy” (Mary) Smith III, Patty (Michael) Cockerham, Sherry (Junior) Dowling, Cindy (James) Campbell, Rhonda (Jerry) Sutherland and Thomas (Peggy) Hill; 10 grandchildren, Randolph J. (Kelly) Smith IV, Adam W. (Trish Surfus) Smith, Chad M. (Renae) Cockerham, Bryan “B.J.” (Amy) Cockerham, Dustin L. (Mary) Dowling, Shawn E. Israel, Chad (Amy) Sutherland, Matt (Tara) Sutherland, Thomas (Angela) Hill and Kelsey Hill; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert L. Smith and Edward Wayne Smith; sister, Dorothy Storey; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter; grandson; three brothers, Ernest Smith, Farrell Ray Smith and Orville Scott; and four sisters, Erma Smith Sutton, Helen Johnson Maxwell, Lela Johnson Scott Curry and Margaret Smith Marling.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at Voss Chapel in Seymour with Dr. Garrett Mills and the Rev. Steve Greene officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47 and Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.

Visitation will be from noon until time of service today at the funeral home.
