The city of North Vernon will close U.S. 50 east of State Road 3 for a half-hour Saturday for the annual Christmas parade.

The closing will be from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has issued a permit for the closure. North Vernon police will be responsible for directing vehicular traffic around the closure.

Holiday floats and parade marchers will depart from a staging area at the post office at 5 p.m. via Poplar Street. They will proceed through Jennings Street, Fifth Street and O&M Avenue before returning to the post office.

The event begins earlier in the afternoon and features caroling, an appearance by Santa Claus and the blessing and lighting of the city’s Christmas tree.

The city of Scottsburg also received a similar permit from INDOT to close State Road 56 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday for that community’s annual Christmas parade. Scottsburg police will be responsible for traffic control at the parade site.

Parade participants on State Road 56/McClain Avenue are routed from Washington Street to First Street to Wardell Street.

During Saturday’s festivities, the city’s holiday lights will be officially lit. There also will be a variety of entertainment performances and Santa’s appearance at the Claus house on the courtyard.
