The Seymour Owls hosted Columbus East on Friday at Bulleit Stadium.
The team grabbed their second straight win after a 41-26 victory over the Olympians. Seymour improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.
“I told our defense to continue to get stops and get the ball back to our offense,” head coach Tyson Moore said. “That was a huge win against a very disciplined team in Columbus East. It was huge for the team, for the school, and for the community, and I hope the fans enjoyed it, because it was amazing to coach.”
The outcome came after a productive night on offense for the Owls, taking a 28-13 lead into halftime.
The Owls won the toss, but decided to defer the ball to the Olympians. Columbus East muffed the kick but was able to recover the ball. Seymour still pinned the Olympians inside their own ten due to the muff.
Columbus QB Kyson Villarreal picked up a few first downs with his legs, leading to an Olympian score to take a 6-0 lead. Villarreal rushed into the end zone for a 3 yard touchdown. Bret Perry and the Owls came right back to score, hitting Logan Shelly on a slant for an 8 yard touchdown. Jack Pennington converted the PAT to take the 7-6 lead.
The Olympians came right back, returning the kick to the 43. After a few plays, Columbus East was in Owls territory.
Villarreal continued to excel on his legs, eventually leading Columbus East in the red zone. The quarterback rolled to his right, finding Blake Borkhardt for the 12 yard touchdown. Columbus East added the extra point to go up 13-7.
Seymour marched right back down the field with huge receptions from Kyle Hileman and Pennington to put themselves inside the five. Cameron Wheeler then ran in for a one-yard rushing touchdown to take back the lead at 14-13.
Jaylan Johnson then intercepted his first of two picks off of Villarreal. The turnover set the Owls up at the Olympians’ 30 yard line. Cam Wheeler then found the end zone again, this time on a four-yard pass from Perry, extending the lead to 21-13,
Columbus East thought they had a touchdown on the following drive. Villarreal hit Keaton Lawson for a touchdown, but it was called back to an ineligible receiver downfield.
Seymour then forced the Olympians to turn the ball over on a 4th and 5, marching down the field to score one last time before halftime. Perry found Johnson for a 36 yard touchdown to take the 26-13 lead, adding the two-point conversion thanks to a Nicholas Wheeler handoff. It was now 28-13 in favor of the Owls.
“We attacked well on offense and moved the ball well,” Moore added. “The team believed in themselves and came out to play. It’s an exciting win for sure, and I’m very proud of the team for how they performed tonight.”
Johnson then made his other interception on defense to send the Owls fans into a frenzy.
As the second half began, Seymour found the end zone again from Cameron Wheeler, who scored on a 36 yard touchdown pass. 35-13 was the score, until Tyler Wheeler ran for a 20 yard score for the Olympians, cutting the deficit to 15.
After Seymour failed to convert on 4th down, Columbus East came marching back into the game, led by Villarreal, who led the Olympians down the field inside the 5 yard line. Caaden Gault almost caught a potential score, but it was broken up by the defensive back in Pennington.
The play proved to be a pivotal stop, after the Owls stopped East again on 4th and goal. Seymour took over on their own five with 11 minutes to go in the game, leading Columbus East 35-20.
Seymour added another quick score in the 4th quarter, with Perry finding wideout Kyle Hileman for a 70 yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 41-20. Right before, the Olympians scored on a 20 yard rushing touchdown from Villarreal. The two-point conversion was not successful, making it 41-26 in favor of Seymour.
The Owls then cautiously moved the ball down the field to run the clock out for the 15 point win. Seymour now improves to 2-0 in the Hoosier Hills Conference and sits atop the standings at the moment. The team travels to Floyd Central in week 5 to compete in another conference matchup.
