The 2023 Seymour Owls begin their football season at home tonight against visiting Greenwood.

Seymour has a bad taste in its mouth from last season’s matchup against the Woodmen.

Greenwood defeated the Owls 35-7 in that game. The team is looking forward to another shot at Greenwood.

Head coach Tyson Moore is looking forward to the matchup.

“They are a much-improved team from last season,” Moore said. “We suffered a nightmare loss to them last season. Their strength is their line play, offensively and defensively. They are more experienced and have a new coaching staff. They are overall much improved, and they do good things. They also have some versatile weapons on the edge.”

Moore was asked what his main focus for the Owls would be in the game.

“Our biggest point of emphasis this season is being able to start out fast,” he said. “Whether that is on offense or defense, we can’t afford to go out on a Friday night and immediately give up a touchdown or go three-and-out on offense. We’re focusing on scoring when we get the ball, and we have to make stops when it counts.”

Moore is working with 92 kids this season for the football team, the most he has had since he took over in 2020. He spoke about his favorite part about the kids on this year’s team.

“The biggest thing is the level of expectation that they’ve created for themselves,” Moore said. “We want to continue to build on the standard we set last season. These kids hold each other accountable, and they click together. They have a lot of fun together, and it’s a very good atmosphere.”

The seniors on this year’s roster include Jesus Aguilar, Dametreous Collins, Marc Francois, Kyle Hileman, Alex Juan, Benjamin Marks, Owen Kruse, Sam Rockey, Jack Pennington, Bret Perry, Ryan Pike, Jordan Ritter, Brayden Rorick, Sam Rockey, Evan Royer, Evan Rudicel, Devan Snow, Cameron Wheeler and Hunter Wick.

Juniors are Jackson Brock, Noah Broughton, Curtis Burke, Jacob Givens, Kenneth Hurley, Devon Jackson, Jaylan Johnson, Andrew Lamarr, Will Mahoney, Mitchell Mellencamp, Mason Nugent, Logan Shelly, Cole Simmons, Nick Wheeler and Mikey Wright.

Sophomores on the 2023 roster are Diego Aguilar, Nolan Bartels, Charlie Bruce, Cameron Carpenter, Logan Cunningham, Jacob Dahlquist, Juan Diego, Wyatt Hartley, Traysen Hawkins, Aaron Holt, Francisco Juan, Rylee Munoz, Max Klapacz, Nolan Keyes, Jayden Matlock, Alexx Millikin, Bradyn Riley, Elmer Rivera Jr., Nathaniel Sallee, Chase Smith, Zachary Sturgill and Braiden Toppe.

The freshmen on the 2023 Owls football team are Miller Acton, Hayden Alcorn, Curtis Burke, Towsend Chambers, Alexis Cisneros, Max Coates, Daniel Cruz, Paul Cole, Philip Dacayo, Gunner Day, Jacob Dowell, Tyce Hardwick, Palik Findley, Noah Fish, Jackson Fox, Preston Hatton, Nehemiah Jones, Lane Kleber, Noah McDonald, Jack Mellencamp, Jesus Morales, Ivan Padilla, Anthony Robbins, Anthony Rohde, Melvin Romero, Ben Simmons, Charlie Rockey, Preston Ross, Brodey Sawyer, Gabriel Seabolt, Cooper Smith, Blake Stainbrook, Bryce Stafford, Kasey Sullivan and Mattox Wallace.

Moore was then asked what the team must do in order to have a successful season in 2023.

“We have to stay focused,” he said. “I think we let some distractions get in our way last year. Dropping our opening game last year set up a distraction for the team. If we can get on track and stay focused, if they can continue to do that, it will add to the success that these guys can have.”
