After a two-week shutdown because of a positive COVID-19 test within its ranks, the Indiana University football team has resumed voluntary workouts in preparation for its fall season.

The athletic department made the announcement Friday.

The Hoosiers ceased practice July 17 following the advice of the school’s Athletics Medical Advisory Group after a positive test for the coronavirus was catalogued.

IU opens its football season Sept. 4 against Wisconsin. The Big Ten Conference has announced that none of its member schools will play nonleague games this season and other conferences have adopted similar plans since.

Under the current phase-in of workouts, football teams can voluntarily participate in activities during the summer for up to 20 hours of practices and conditioning weekly. The breakdown includes eight hours of strength training, up to six hours of meetings and film reviews and up to six hours of walk-throughs of plays.

In a statement, the athletic department also announced it has conducted 480 COVID-19 tests to student-athletes on campus from various sports teams preparing for fall competition. Athletes have been subjected to testing since June 8. Voluntary workouts began June 15.

Of those, 447 negative test results came back negative and 33 were read as positive.
