Owls, Braves and Tigers continue postseason journeys

NASHVILLE

It was a crisp 45 degrees when Jackson County runners began their postseason runs on Saturday morning at the Brown County sectional.

A far cry from the usual balmy summer and fall heat they’ve been running in all season long, the cold weather didn’t slow down Seymour and Brownstown Central harriers.

With six of their seven runners finishing within the top 20, the Seymour boys cross country team took second behind Columbus North with 55 points.

Luke Plummer led the Owls’ strong corp of runners with a third-place finish of 16 minutes and 35 seconds. He was right with the lead pack throughout the entirety of the race until the Bulldogs Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff pulled away for the individual title on the final lap.

Plummer was also the top-finishing senior in the meet.

Sophomore Michael Proffer came in ninth for the Owls at 16:57 and was the last racer to come in under the 17-minute mark. Brandon Kleber finished just outside the top-10 in 12th place with a time of 17:14.

Younger brother Jude Bane outdid older brother Lucas as the two came in 15th and 16th, respectively, to round out the scoring times for Seymour.

Jude was six seconds faster than Lucas with a time of 17:20.

The Seymour girls team finished just a point shy of second place in Saturday’s race, coming in with 75 points for third.

Host Brown County grabbed second place behind Columbus North with 74 points while the Bulldogs finished with 16 points as their top-seven runners all came in the top 20. The top-four finishers all came from Columbus North.

Owl senior Makenna Sunbury broke the trend of Columbus North finishers, coming in fifth with a time of 19:27.

Two racers later and freshman Kinsley Folsom took seventh for the Owls with a time of 19:40.

Seniors Grace Rennekamp and Elizabeth Hougland took 14th and 20th with times of 20:42 and 21:28, respectively, while freshman Grace Lewis finished 29th at 22:37 to round out the Seymour scoring.

For Brownstown Central, both the boys and girls teams took sixth place, just a handful of points away from advancing as a team.

However, all five of the top runners from each side will move on to the Columbus regional at Ceraland on Saturday.

On the boys’ side, the Braves’ Mason Kellogg was 14th with a time of 17:17. He was followed by Nathan Koch in 26th with a time of 18:02.

Also moving on for the Braves is Andrew Wheeles in 30th (18:02), Clayton Barger in 35th (18:27) and Trey Hackman in 37th (18:51).

Jazzlyn Yeadon led the girls’ team with a 21st place finish of 21:41.

She will also be joined at next week’s regional by Grace Garland, who finished 31st at 22:42 and Kylee Wischmeier, who came in 36th at 23:15.

Also moving on are: Emma Winks, who finished 38th at 23:55 and Zoe Fountain, who finished 39th at 23:59.

In Hanover, the Crothersville Tigers will move three runners into Saturday’s regional.

Last year’s state qualifier Kaylyn Holman took third at the sectional with a time of 20:28 while teammate Grace Wilson was 31st at 23:42.

On the boys’ side, David Rose was 11th at 17:25.

Saturday’s regional will start at 10:30 a.m. at Ceraland Park in Columbus.
