A 61-year-old Vallonia man died in a crash Friday night just west of Seymour, police report.

Police said Lamar Anderson died after a two-vehicle crash on State Road 258.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, public information officer for the Indiana State Police Versailles Post, said Anderson was driving westbound near the East Fork White River bridge between Seymour and Cortland when his red 2001 Chevrolet truck left the north side of the roadway.

Anderson struck a guardrail before coming to a stop and facing east in the westbound lane, Wheeles said.

That’s when a 2014 Buick sport utility vehicle driven by Elizabeth Helwig, 70, of Seymour struck Anderson’s truck, Wheeles said.

The crash happened around 9 p.m.

Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office. Helwig was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for non-life-threatening injuries.

Toxicology results on both drivers are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Trooper Matt Holley with the ISP Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team investigated the incident. The highway was closed for nearly four hours.

The team worked through hard rains and high wind during the investigation.

Holley was assisted by Trooper David Owsley, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Seymour Police Department, Seymour Fire Department, Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Department, Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and Jackson County Coroner’s Office.
