The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Jackson County leadership recently met to continue planning the May 11 event.

The indoor event has a Disney theme, “Wish Upon a Cure!” and is from 6 to 11 p.m. that day at Seymour High School.

Event lead Melissa Rebber introduced the rest of the event leadership team: Jan Engel, Fund the Cure and luminaria; Jeanie Schneider, people lead; Mary Reed, sponsorship; Amberly Brewer, survivor/caregiver co-lead; Dee Hess, accounting; Julia Aker, marketing and online; Dr. Stephanie Burgess, mission; Charlie Smith, youth; Ron Duncan, logistics; and Stacey Brummett, survivor/caregiver co-lead and concessions.

Positions still needed are experience lead, activities, ceremonies, community champions and team ambassadors.

Brewer and Brummett mailed 144 Christmas cards to local cancer survivors. The annual Survivor Dinner is April 21 at The Point in Seymour. It’s free for survivors, and it’s $5 each for an unlimited number of guests. Invitations will be mailed this month. Dinner includes chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes and roll. Entertainment is by local group Frisky Business.

Everyone is encouraged to join or renew membership in ACS-CAN (Cancer Action Network), a grassroots organization to help with state and national cancer funding.

Teams are encouraged to join soon and start fundraising. Anyone wanting to start a team or register as a survivor can go online to register at relayforlife.org/jacksoncountyin. All registrations must be submitted online, on an official registration form or by calling 800-227-2345.

Team representatives announced upcoming fundraisers:

  • ESA One Step One Miracle is taking orders for homemade ice cream in seven flavors. The cost is $5 for 12 ounces. Orders may be placed on the Scoop to Loop Ice Cream page on Facebook. Ice cream will be available for pickup in April.
  • Caring Hearts is selling Texas Roadhouse rolls and Marion-Kay Spices from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 9 in the Schneck Medical Center lobby.
  • Bloomin’ Librarians is selling stuffed plastic Easter eggs through March 23. The cost is $15 for 25 eggs, $25 for 50 eggs or $50 for 100 eggs. They will be delivered March 31 upon request. The team also will have a rummage sale at the Seymour Main Street Parking Lot Pickers event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 14 in the Walnut Street Parking Lot.

In addition to fundraising, teams are encouraged to find sponsors for Relay for Life by April 2. The American Cancer Society will recognize all sponsors of $1,000 or more with a logo on the back of participant T-shirts. Sponsors $500 or higher will have their name on T-shirts, and two yard signs with their name will be at the event. For $250, sponsors will have two yard signs, and for $100, the business name will be in the event program.

Each team is encouraged to select a Disney movie and decorate its area with the movie theme. The movie choice should be sent to Rebber.
