SEYMOUR

Shirley Ann (Loper) Thom, 88, of Seymour, Indiana passed away peacefully Monday, May 20, 2024, at Lutheran Community Home. She was born January 19, 1936, in Brownstown, Indiana to the late George and Marie (Lutes) Loper. She had an amazing laugh, a quick wit, and was usually the life of any party.

Shirley came from humble beginnings on a small farm where she learned to value the simple joys of hospitality, friendship, and good times. After graduating Crothersville High School, she bravely embarked on an adventure to live with family in the big city of Indianapolis, even though she would later say this was the scariest thing she’d ever done. She secured a job with Indiana Bell Telephone and mastered big city life, making many new friends. She loved to travel with her sisters Wanda, Joy, and Karen, making memories to last a lifetime. Shirley will be remembered for her trademark neck scarves that matched every outfit, her cornbread made in a special glass pan, and her love for mowing with her prized John Deere lawnmower.

No tribute to Shirley would be complete without mention of her beloved dog Caesar, her constant and loyal companion for many years. A 12 x 18 oil portrait of Caesar accompanied Shirley each time she moved and will go with her to her final resting place.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Mark (Melanie) Thom; sister, Karen (Bob) Burbrink; brother-in-law, Steve Maxie; niece, Connie Weathersby; nephews, Brian Maxie, Doug Burbrink, and Philip (Crista) Burbrink; great nephews, Mason Kaiser, Christopher Schrader, Toby Weathersby, Seth Maxie, Cory Burbrink, and Brett Burbrink; great nieces, Abbie Able, Mallory Kaiser, Isabel Burbrink, and Julia Burbrink; 12 great great nieces and nephews, and two on the way.

She is preceded in death by her parents, listed above; and sisters, Wanda Maxie and Joy Flo Loper.

A funeral service for Shirley will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Voss &Sons Funeral Home, 316 North Chestnut Street, Seymour. Pastor Stephen Barrett will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions in Shirley’s honor may be made to The Parkinson’s Foundation.
