BLOOMINGTON — Spencer Sunbury, coach of the Seymour Lady Owls track team, said the Bloomington North Girls Regional Tuesday night is one of the best in the state.

Seymour, Brownstown Central and Trinity Lutheran athletes found that statement to be true as none of the Jackson County athletes placed high enough (top three) to advance to the state finals next weekend.

Seymour’s Sydnie Montgomery tied for fifth in the high jump for Jackson County’s highest finisher.

Bloomington North ran away with the title by scoring 103.5 points. Bloomington South was second with 70, Northview was third with 48, Seymour was 16th with 11.5 points, Brownstown was 29th with 3 points, and Trinity’s athletes did not score.

Montgomery tied with Kenli Sulllivan of Bloomington North. Both jumpers made their first attempt at 5-1, then both missed all three tries at 5-2.

Montgomery placed 13th in the 400 at 1:04.47, and teamed up with Anna Marks, Ella Brock and Alexa Stuckwisch to place 7th in the 4×400 relay at 4:34.61.

Seymour’s Vivienne Siefker placed seventh in the 3200 at 12:16.32 and she was eighth in the 1600 at 5:39.28. She also joined AnnMarie Shuler, Gracie Adams and Kelly Beavers in the 4×800 relay to place 8th at 10:40.88.

Stuckwisch was 7th in the 400 at 1:02.96. Kamryn Aynes, Anna Marks, Ella Brock and Kenzi Henkle placed 9th in the 4×100 relay at 53.216.

Seymour did not score in the other events.

Coach Sunbury spoke about the high-level of competition.

“There’s a lot of good athletes over here,” he said. “A lot of our girls were nervous about things, but we came out and gave it a good effort. It’s just that it’s been a screwy end of the season the last two weeks with the weather and postponements and things like that.”

“I think it’s kind of messed with them a little bit. We had a good night. We had some PRs (personnel bests) and some good performances, strong performances.

“There were some bittersweet moments. We’re going to miss our seniors. They are three great girls that have worked hard and helped us a lot over the years.

Sunbury said he has a good group of athletes returning.

“We had a lot of young ones over here, too, so it was a good experience for a couple of those freshmen girls. We have a lot of those key pieces coming back. Listening to them talk they’re excited about seeing what happens next year.”

Montgomery, Siefker and Marks were the three seniors that competed for the Owls.

Brownstown or Trinity did not have any seniors competing.

Hailey Bair scored Brownstown’s points by placing sixth in the long jump with a jump of 18.25. That was her best jump of the season.

Brownstown Coach Maria Conklin spoke the team performance.

“The Lady Braves performed well despite the nerves,” she said. “It was a great experience for our athletes, especially considering we had lots of underclassmen competing (1 freshman, 4 sophomores and 2 juniors).

“Competing at regional is an accomplishment, and we’re proud of the girls and their efforts.”

Lexi Wheeles and Tori Lokey were seniors on the Brownstown roster. Conklin said, “Lexi and Tori were great senior leaders this year. Lexi and Tori had great seasons, and we’re proud of their success throughout their high school careers,” Conklin said.

Dede Eberle of Bloomington North won both hurdles and the long jump. Double winners were Lynic Steele of Jeffersonville in the 100 and 200, and Hadley Lucas of Bloomington North of in the shot put and discus. She threw the discus an Olympic-qualifying distance of 175 feet.
