BEDFORD — Drew Hubbard is preparing for a match in the individual sectional round of the IHSAA state tennis tournament, while the remainder of her teammates and the Seymour team saw their seasons come to an end Saturday in the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional.

Trinity lost 4-1 to BNL, while Seymour edged Jennings County 3-2, then lost to BNL 3-2 in the finals.

Hubbard won both matches in the sectional, defeating Jesse Fabian of BNL 6-1, 6-0 Saturday morning after beating a Brownstown Central opponent earlier in the week.

The individual sectional will be at BNL this week with the announcement of Hubbard’s opponent and the time of the match being forthcoming.

Hubbard said she felt like she had two good matches in the sectional.

“I was able to get on top of it early,” she said. “I had some pretty quick matches. The scores were both 6-0, 6-1. I just tried to make quick work and make smart plays.”

She will take a record of 18-5 into the next round.

“We are so stroked for Drew to get to continue on at one,” Trinity Coach Jayme Lowe said. “We’re looking forward to cheering her on and get some more wins under her belt before she heads on to Hanover.”

Trinity’s No. 1 doubles team of Carson Bowling and Kiley Zabel lost 3-6, 6-1 7-5 to BNL and Emily Keller and Natalie Martinez fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Katie Malone and Presley Meyer lost in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

“I’m so proud of the girls and all they did in the sectional,” Lowe added. We felt confident going in and even today with our losses, I think they all played well. They were very competitive, and really demonstrated all the work they put in over the season.

“We can look forward to future seasons of having some success there.”

The Cougars finished 13-6.

It became hot on the BNL courts, and the Owls fell victim to the heat.

In the win against Jennings County, Claire Combs won in straight sets at No. 3 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Addison Hunsley and Kelsea Hunsley, and the No. 2 team of Emma Woodard and Tori Fee also won in straight sets.

Seymour’s Elise Hartung was overcome by the heat and had to default her no. 2 singles match, while Ava Sunbury lost in straight sets at No. 1 singles.

In the championship match, Sunbury won her first set against Fabian and was leading the second set when she was overcome by the heat and unable to continue.

Combs suffered an ankle in her first set against Nadia Anderson and was unable to continue.

Hartung came out strong and defeated Ava McKinney 6-3, 6-1, and Fee and Woodard posted a 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 tiebreaker win over Emma Conner and Meryl Klein.

The Hunsley sisters lost 6-4, 6-2. Owls Head Coach Jacob Hunt spoke on the outcome with the Stars.

“Everybody fought really hard today,” he said. “It’s just a shame how it had to end up. We had three different injuries.”

Hunt said it was nice to see Fee and Hartung win their matches against BNL.

“Those were our two seniors this year, Elise, and Tori playing with Emily. I was glad to at least see our seniors win so they could end their season on a high note.

The coach also spoke about the win over the Panthers.

“The Jennings games went well,” Hunt added. “Aside from Elise’s heat problem, we played really well. Our losses were at one singles and two singles, so our doubles played really well. Ava played really well, too, but they just had very strong No. 1 singles.”

“This year was a lot of fun. I’m really going to miss our seniors. The whole team had a lot of personality, and worked really hard, so this year was great.”
