County auditor resigns

A caucus will soon be held to fill the vacated position of Jackson County Auditor after Staci Eglen effectively resigned from the position at 4:30 p.m. May 3.

Eglen of Cortland was selected to replace former Auditor Roger Hurt, who resigned in 2023, during a caucus of Republican precinct committeemen and committeewomen.

The reason for her resignation is unclear at this time, according to the county attorney Susan Bevers with Lorenzo Bevers Braman & Connell.

Bevers said Eglen decided to not run for office in the primary election, therefore she was not on the ballot.

Amanda Cunningham Lowery, the county’s Republican Party chairwoman, said a caucus of precinct committee men and women is set for 6 p.m. May 20 in the upstairs meeting room of the Jackson County Courthouse at 111 S. Main St., Brownstown.

In the interim, Jamie Pyle has been appointed auditor. Bevers said Pyle was on the primary ballot and had already decided to run for the position. She was the administrative assistant to Eglen this past year and previously worked as a probate clerk in the Jackson Circuit Court since 2014.

“Jamie was appointed interim in case there was any need to file a report with the state,” Bevers said. “The remainder of the employees in the office are still employed and continue to perform their responsibilities.”

The auditor, which is a constitutional office, is the fiscal officer for county government in Indiana and serves as the secretary of the board of county commissioners and the clerk to the county council. As a constitutional office, auditors can only hold two consecutive four-year terms.

The auditor’s responsibilities also include keeping and issuing checks for the county and distributing property tax revenues to the governmental units and agencies for which they were collected.

The auditor assists with budget preparations by developing financial analysis and cash flow projections and also must prepare plats that show ownership and assess valuation of each parcel in each township of the county.
