The Seymour Lady Owls tennis team dominated Columbus East from the opening serves and blanked the Olympians 5-0 in the opening round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament at home Monday afternoon.

In singles action, Ava Sunbury was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Sara Moran at No. 1, Elise Hartung blanked Emily Zhu 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, and Claire Combs was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Bruna Caerra in the second singles match.

Sisters Addison and Kelsea Hunsley blanked Zoe White and Lillie Smith at No. 1 doubles, and Tori Fee and Emma Woodard blanked Lucy Moreles and Saya Hauser 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

This is the second time this season that Seymour has swept East. Coach Jacob Hunt was confident in the Owls going into the match.

“We’ve worked really hard this season, and we had some good backing from our previous match against East (April 11 at home,” Hunt said.

“I think they were playing really well,” he added. “Every match is kind of an opportunity to kind of work on different things, so I was really proud of them for trying new formations, trying out new strategies, and I think they did really well.”

The Owls (8-5) will play at the winner of the Floyd Central-Jennings County match in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Seymour defeated Floyd Central and Jennings County earlier this season.

Hunt said, “We’re working on different formations for doubles, where the net person should stand, different strategies on how to get the other person moving, whether that is going to be drop shots, whether that’s moving them back-and-forth across the court, just stuff like that.”
