Brownstown Central has proven to be one of the top boys’ golf programs in Class 2A, coming into Seymour on Monday for a matchup with Trinity Lutheran at Shadowood Golf Course.

The Braves downed the Cougars, winning the meeting 152-218. Led by Micah Sheffer, who carded a 34 for a 2-under par. Caiden Gwin and Cole Brelage both scored 39’s for Brownstown in the round, followed by Smith Hackman, scoring a 40.

Matthew Reedy and Collin Downing ended their rounds with a 43. Braves’ Head Coach Brent Hattabaugh spoke on the winning effort on Monday night.

“Today’s goal was to get four good scores and get back to being consistent,” Hattabaugh said. “Micah (Sheffer) hit the ball really well for us. Both of our seniors in Caiden and Cole played really well.”

Trinity was led by Alex Overgaard, recording a 47, which tied his season low. Rylan Adair finished the round with a 51, followed by Wylie Jones and Nolan Teipen, who both carded 60’s.

Cougars’ Head Coach Kim Overgaard spoke about the outcome with the Braves.

“I would say that most of the players are being consistent and improvements are coming slowly,” Overgaard said.

Overgaard spoke on how the team needs to improve their accuracy off the tee.

“Hopefully we can improve our accuracy on tee shots, because that makes second shots easier,” he said. “That should allow us to improve our scores.”

Hattabaugh is liking a lot of things about the Braves, but believes the short game could still use some improvement moving forward.

“We still need to work on our short game and our putting heading into the Mid-Southern Conference meet on Saturday,” he said.

The Mid-Southern meet is taking place at Wooded View Golf Course in Clarksville on Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The team then hosts Borden and Salem at Hickory Hills Golf Course on May. 13th at 4:30 p.m.

Trinity’s meet was cancelled on Tuesday, but they will now take a week off before their next meet. The Cougars will be back in action next Tuesday, hosting Jennings County and Orleans at Shadowood Golf Course at 5 p.m.
