Lady Braves finish third in Braves’ Relays on Saturday

BROWNSTOWN— It was a chilly morning, turned into a cool afternoon, leading to great weather for a Track and field meet. That was the site on Saturday in Brownstown for the Braves’ Relays.

The girls’ team would finish the meet in third place with a team score of 59, behind Bedford North Lawrence (65) and Corydon Central, who won the meet with a score of 99.

Lady Braves Head Coach Maria Conklin spoke on the outcome on Saturday.

“I thought we had a good day in some spots. I am glad we were able to bring these relays back to our schedule,” Conklin said. “I know people who have been here forever, who were excited about us bringing these back.”

The team took first place in the closest race of the day in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, edging out Bedford by a tenth of a second to win the race with a time of 1:15.43.

The team of Ella Nehrt, Paige Thompson, Kaylee Steward, and Noe McPherson pulled together for the victory.

The other win was from a field event in Olivia Fritz, who won the shot-put competition for the Lady Braves. Runner-up finishes came from Noelani McPherson in 100-meter hurdles and Fritz in the discus throw. The freshmen Lady Braves had two runner-up finishes in the 4×100 and the 4×400-meter relay.

“It was the first time we’ve held this in 15 years, so I’m happy with that,” Coach Conklin said. “I’m thankful for all the teams that were able to make it here today.”

The coach spoke about a strength for the team this season.

“We’re trying our best, working hard every day to continue to get better,” she said. “We’ve been moving kids around everywhere, to figure out their best fit. We’ve had a few injuries as well, but we will continue to work hard as we progress through the season.”

“Those are some of the things we like to see at this point,” Conklin finished.

It was also ‘senior day’ for the Lady Braves, who honored Lexi Wheeles and Tori Lokey for their commitment and hard work over the past four years.

Wheeles spoke on her senior day experience.

“It wasn’t my best day, I felt pretty confident heading into the discus competition,” Wheeles said. “I didn’t do as well as I thought I would.”

“I came into today pretty excited, but after getting recognized, it became sad for me,” she said. “It’s sad to see track almost done, and it’s my favorite sports season, so it’s definitely bittersweet.”

The senior spoke about her favorite part of being on the Brownstown track team.

“I love winning the meets, I love the people that I get to run with and be teammates with,” Wheeles said. “I enjoy being in the team environment and it’s a pretty awesome feeling to be apart of it.”
