Centennial sensation

Thumbs up to Orpha Emkes of Seymour who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Emkes and her family has made an enormous impact on Seymour and recently celebrated a fantastic birthday have the chance to so. She has kept herself healthy, never having fallen extremely ill and even survived having COVID-19.

All-star

Thumbs up to Brownstown Central High School senior Jack Benter who recently was named to the Indiana Basketball All-Star team. He is Brownstown Central’s second Indiana All-Star as Jeff Morning was an all-star in 1986. The Indiana All-Stars will play the Indiana Junior All-Stars June 5 in Kokomo, then face the Kentucky All-Stars June 7 at Lexington Catholic High School in Lexington, Kentucky, and on June 8 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Fun(d)-raising

Thumbs up to everyone who participated in the inaugural Firetruck Pull presented by Special Olympics Indiana Jackson County and the Seymour Fire Department on April 13. The list includes the 14 teams who had the chance to pull a firetruck three times with the goal of pulling it 50 feet. The event raised $15,000, money that went to the local Special Olympics program, which provides athletic training and competition in Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities ages 8 and up.

Volunteer appreciation

Thumbs up to the volunteers who supplement the staff at the Brownstown Public Library and the Jackson County Public Library in Seymour, Crothersville and Medora. National Volunteer Week begins Sunday and will continue through April 27 across the nation. It’s a time for local libraries to show their volunteers appreciation from their time and service over the past year. A related thumbs up the Jackson County Public Library’s Friends of the Library organization, which provides volunteers for the Book Nook, bi-monthly sales and Oktoberfest parking.
