BROWNSTOWN — The Brownstown Central Community School Corp. board of school trustees recognized the Braves of the Month during a meeting Tuesday night at the administration office.

Those honored were senior Gavin Jaynes, second-grader Amil Soriano and eighth-grader Bryce Garland.

According to the nomination letter from the Brownstown Central High School guidance department, Jaynes has shown significant progress socially and academically over the last three years.

“He is always willing to help those in need,” guidance counselor Emily Sommers said while reading the nomination letter. “Gavin was recently seen helping a student when their car broke down alongside the road. This year he has been focused on raising his GPA and taking classes that will be beneficial in pursuing his dream of becoming a police officer. Gavin is enrolled in Ivy Tech and plans to pursue a degree in criminal justice next fall.

The Guidance Department is extremely proud of Gavin.

We are very appreciative of Gavin’s efforts and would like to recognize him before our school superintendent and school board of trustees.

Marty Young, principal of Brownstown Elementary School, said Amil was a pleasure to have in school.

“He always willing to help others and a joy to be around,” he said. “One thing that really stands out to me is how great of a big brother he is. He is always walking his little brothers — they are in pre-K —every morning when they get there to make sure they get to be where they need to be. I’m super proud of him because he always does that.”

Soriano was nominated by second grade teacher, Amy Hehman.

She wrote that Soriano deserves to be recognized as the school’s Little Brave of the Month.

“Amil is one of the most respectful boys in my class,” Hehman said. “I have never heard him say a harsh word about anyone. He is very polite with his manners and also works very hard.

“Amil started the year off struggling in reading. He has put in lots of effort this year, and it has shown off. He passed the IREAD test last month and his AR comprehension is at 93%. The first nine weeks of school, Amil never wanted to read aloud or answer any questions.

“Now, he is always willing to volunteer. His confidence has grown beyond measure, and I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Doug McClure, principal of Brownstown Central Middle School, said Garland was selected Brave of the Month by the eighth-grade teachers.

“Bryce is a very responsible student that is a hard worker,” the teachers wrote. “He goes about his business in a professional manner which contributes to his high academic performance. He is respectful to both students and teachers and has evolved as a quiet leader among his peers.

“Bryce is also a student-athlete as he competes in both baseball and basketball. He also serves as a RAT in the library. He sets a good example in the classroom, throughout the school, and in the area of athletics as well.

“We appreciate Bryce’s effort and attitude on a daily basis and congratulate him on earning this honor.”
