Brownstown’s Jack Benter named county boys’ basketball player of the year

Jack Benter has done it all for the Brownstown Central boys basketball team.

He holds numerous game, season and career records at Brownstown, and holds several Jackson County records.

This season he led the Braves to the Class 2A state championship with a 55-36 win over Wapahani on March 30 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

For his efforts he has repeated as Jackson County’s Player of the Year.

Jack’s coach throughout his career has been his father, Dave.

“Jack is a generational player. He’s worked really hard the past four years to develop his all-around game,” Coach Benter said. “His leadership really took a big jump this year.”

Jack said winning the state with his dad coaching on the sideline.

“I think it’s really special. Our whole community has been great. Just to win it for my dad means a lot,” Jack said. “Playing at Brownstown and with my friends and winning a state title is something I have always dreamed of since I have been little.”

Dave said coaching your son isn’t as easy as one might think, especially with all the expectations the team had this season.

“My wife took my phone away from me (Friday night before the state finals),” he said. “I had 30 texts. Everybody says how special this is. ‘Enjoy the moment,’ they said.

“I think Jack is the most difficult match up in high school in Indiana.

“There are perimeter players that can shoot, there are perimeter players that can pass, but his ability to do both (was special).”

Jack said after winning state, “It is bittersweet. Every good thing comes to an end at some point. To be able to go out with a win means a lot.”

He led Jackson County players in scoring this season at 25 points per game and scored 25 in the state championship game.

Jack said the records he is most proud of “are being the all-time leading scorer in the county, and the single-game leading scorer at Brownstown because there have been so many good players go through Brownstown and the county, and the most 3s because I have worked hard throughout my life on my shooting.”

He is 11th all-time in scoring in Indiana with 2,550 points.

The Braves were 88-20 in Jack’s four years at BCHS. They won three Mid-Southern titles, three sectionals, two regionals, one semi-state and one state title in the past four seasons. He was all-MSC again this season.

“We only lost two games in four years at home,” he said. “We only lost two games the last two years when we have been healthy as a team.”

They were 28-4 this season.

Benter will graduate this spring, before heading off to West Lafayette, where he’ll suit up for Purdue. The Boilermakers are fresh off a NCAA Tournament Final appearance in which they lost 75-60.
