The Owls hosted their first track meet of the 2023-24 season on Thursday against Jennings County and Bedford North Lawrence.

It was a rainy start to the evening, but the Owls managed to grab a win on the boys’ and girls’ side of events. Seymour took the victory with 80 team points for the girls and 74 points for the boys.

Boys coach Randy Fife spoke about the winning effort on Thursday.

“It was a good opener for the boys. It’s not where we want to be but it’s a start,” Fife said. “We just needed this first meet to see where we are and to get our feet wet as far as competition. Anytime you can win against conference opponents, it’s a good night.”

Jaylan Johnson took first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.34. Johnson also took the top spot in the Long Jump competition with a score of 20’ 6 1/2.

Fife was asked what he considers to be the biggest ‘strength’ of the 2023-24 Seymour team.

“Our biggest strength is that we have athletes that want to get better and they want to compete,”he said. “Our relays will be one of our strong points this year.”

Fife spoke about the teams’ goals for the season that just kicked off.

“Our goals are to continue to work hard, improve, and have fun,” Fife said.
