Best in class

Thumbs up to the Brownstown Central High School boys basketball squad for winning the Indiana High School Athletics Association Class 2A boys basketball crown on March 30. The 28-4 Braves defeated the Wapahani Raiders 55-36 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to win the first boys state basketball title for the school and in the first for a team in the county. Members of the Braves squad, coached by Dave Benter, are Preston Garrison, Parker Hehman, Caiden Gwin, Jack Benter, Owen Wischmeier, Carter Covert, Gregory Hutcheson, Micah Sheffer, Pierson Wheeler, Lane Pendleton, Chace Coomer, Colby Hall, Brock Dean and Adam Stahl. The coaching staff, managers, cheerleaders and fans also deserve a thumbs up for their contributions to the cause.

A related thumbs up to senior Jack Benter who scored 25 points against Wapahani to finish his career with 2,550 points. That’s good enough for 11th on the list of all-time career scoring leaders in the state. Coach Benter also deserves a thumbs up for being named the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association District 3 coach of the year. He also won the award in 2004 and 2010.

Spreading joy

Thumbs up to the Easter Bunny for spreading thousands of Easter eggs across Jackson County in the days leading up to Easter for all the little girls and boys — and some older ones as well.

Youth of the Year

Thumbs up to Brownstown Central High School senior Madison Singleton who recently was named the Brownstown Exchange Club’s Youth of the Month for March — and its Youth of the Year.

Feeding the hungry

Thumbs-up to everyone who participated in a meal-packing event Wednesday at Brownstown Christian Church through Lifeline Christian Mission. Working at six stations, more than 70 volunteers packed food in the church’s fellowship hall. The food which includes rice, barley, vegetables and a vitamin mix will be sent to Guatemala.

No fooling

Thumbs-down to Mother Nature for the recent roller-coaster ride she has taken us on the past few weeks. It’s time for spring to arrive in a blaze of glory.
