Celebration in the making

Freetown is well-known for its annual celebration, held for many years on the Fourth of July and now conducted in the latter part of June.

The celebration coming up, however, may be the biggest one yet, as the town prepares to mark its 150th anniversary. Meetings are now underway to plan the event, and if Freetown’s past festivities are any indication, the sesquicentennial celebration will prove to be a time to remember.

Ona Williams, owner of the Freetown General Store, along with long-time town residents Ray Burnside and Orville Mann, talked recently about how the town has changed, but endured.

“A lot of these buildings have been here for years and years,” said Williams, noting that businesses have changed hands and changed in nature, but still are housed in buildings rich in the town’s history, as Burnside recalled which long-ago businesses was housed in which present-day shops.
