Braves’ clicking on all cylinders heading into semistate basketball matchup

Members of the Brownstown Central boys’ basketball team said they took what the Sullivan defense gave them as far as shooting in last Saturday’s Class 2A Washington Regional.

The Braves outscored the Golden Arrows in all four quarters for a 67-41 victory that extended Brownstown’s win streak to 16 games and advanced them to Saturday’s Southport Semi-state where they will face Park-Tudor at 10 a.m.

Chace Coomer had a big second half when he scored 14 of his 16 points, including all four of his 3-pointers.

“My teammates had a lot of confidence in me to make shots,” Coomer said. “I wasn’t hitting in the first half. In the locker room (at halftime) they told me to keep shooting and I really have to thank Jack (Benter) and Parker (Hehman) for getting me open.

“They take the offensive load most of the time, and they’re just really good players,” he added.

Coomer made four of the 12 3-pointers the Braves made against Sullivan.

This is Coomer’s second year with the Brownstown program after playing at Scottsburg up until last season.

“I feel like we’ve all meshed together. We have good team chemistry,” Coomer said. “I feel like Colby (Hall) and I both were welcomed as soon as we came in here.”

He spoke about the semistate at Southport on Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to staying hot, looking forward to playing well,” Coomer said. “Offense wins games, defense wins championships. We’re pretty good on offense but we really try to hammer defense home first.”

Adam Stahl is in his first season starting for the Braves. He ranks third on the team in rebounds with 135.

He said he feels like his hard work over the summer is the reason he has earned a starting position this winter. “Over the summer is when I started playing a lot.”

He said helping the Braves win a sectional his senior year was really meaningful to him.

“Winning the sectional and beating Providence felt really good,” Stahl said.

“We definitely had to play aggressive against Sullivan. They were physical. It was a good team effort,” he added. “We played some man and sometimes we were in a 1-3-1 to throw them off. It feels good to win the regional.

“We just want to make it a little further than last year,” he added.

Last year the Braves lost the semi-state championship game. Stahl grew up playing basketball in Brownstown.

“I like the coaches, I like my teammates. I like coming into practice,” he said.

Benter scored 25 points against Sullivan to bring his career total to 2,424 points to rank 13th all time for Indiana boys.

He scored all 16 of Brownstown’s points in the first quarter against Sullivan.

“I just took what the defense gave me in the first quarter,” he said. “The guys were making their shots in the second, third and fourth quarters. It means a lot to move on. We’ve just got to bring it next weekend and hopefully get the job done.”

This was Brownstown’s fourth regional in school history and second in a row. Brownstown High School won a regional in 1931, before consolidation.

Brownstown entered the game with a defensive average of 47, so to hold a team six points below the defensive average is nice, according to Benter.

“I feel our defense has really taken a big jump since last year,” Benter said.

Brownstown’s game against Park-Tudor will start at 10 a.m. Forest Park will play Parke Heritage at 12:15 and the championship game will start at 8 p.m.
