Sectional sensations

Thumbs up to the Brownstown Central High School boys basketball squad for winning the Class 2A Southwestern (Hanover) Sectional crown on March 2 by defeating Providence 53-37. The 24-4 Braves take on 21-5 Sullivan at 4 p.m. today in the Washington Regional. Members of the squad are Preston Garrison, Parker Hehman, Caiden Gwin, Jack Benter, Owen Wischmeier, Carter Covert, Gregory Hutcheson, Micah Sheffer, Pierson Wheeler, Lane Pendleton, Chace Coomer, Colby Hall, Brock Dean and Adam Stahl.

Thumbs up to the Trinity Lutheran High School boys basketball squad for winning the Class 1A New Washington Sectional title on March 2 by defeating the host Mustangs 49-33. The 14-11 Cougars will square off against 23-2 Evansville Christian at 4 p.m. today in the Loogootee Regional. Members of Trinity’s squad are Levi Pottschmidt, Kowan Gross, Peyton Pollert, Charlie Hackman, Jake Holland, Kade Gillaspy, Jack Stuckwisch, Trey Owen, Hudson Lang, Reed Mellencamp, Braxton Sinclair, Isaac Darlage, Bode Brooks, Luke Schepman and Logan Schepman.

Academic all stars

A related thumbs up to the three Jackson County athletes named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association All-State Teams. Seymour’s Kendall Sterling was selected to the first team for her hard work in the classroom, and Seymour’s Bret Perry and Brownstown Central’s Parker Hehman received honorable mention recognition.

Winning essayist

Thumbs up to St. Ambrose Catholic School sixth-grader David Lemming who wrote the winning essay in the Sertoma Club of Jackson County’s annual What Freedom Means to Me essay contest. Lemming read his essay Feb. 29 during a banquet at First United Methodist Church in Seymour to recognize contest winners. Five other essay writers also were recognized during the banquet were Ella Blomenburg, Immanuel Lutheran School; Cam Royer, Immanuel; Garrett Steffey, Seymour Intermediate; Aiden Baird, Medora Junior High; and Sophia Sleppy, Seymour Intermediate. Baird and Sleppy were runners-up to Lemming.

CEO to know

Thumbs up to Dr. Eric D. Fish, president and CEO of Schneck Medical Center. He was recently named a “Rural Hospital and Health Systems CEO to Know” by Becker’s Hospital Review. According to Becker’s Hospital Recview, he executives featured on this list are committed to expanding hospital service lines, renovating and improving their facilities, and hiring talented team members. Although many rural hospitals have struggled due to COVID-19 and national staffing shortages in recent years, these leaders have created sustainable models for continued success.
