A day of learning

Teaching kids about disabilities and making them aware of what a disabled person goes through can go a long way toward establishing an understanding about the handicapped.

The purpose of the Seymour Special Education Parents Advisory Council Disability Awareness Day for sixth-graders at Seymour Middle School is to raise awareness of disabilities during this Disability Awareness Month of March.

“This is the first time these kids will be around handicapped children, and we try to bring up their awareness,” said Nancy Ashcraft, president of Seymour SEPAC. “We’re trying to show the kids that these things (disabilities) are out here, and here’s a taste of it.”

“It’s just a real good awareness for the kids,” she added. “It’s hands-on, so they walk away with more of an appreciation of this.”
