The first winter banquet for the Trinity Lutheran Cougars took place on Thursday, with the Lady Cougars celebrating their 2023-24 season. The team would secure its fifth straight sectional title.

Head Coach Darrin Keith spoke about the season.

“I appreciate everything that everyone does for this program, its a real priviledge to be apart of it,” Keith said. “Our season had some highs with a few thrilling overtime wins. Injuries hurt us, I’ve never had so many in the same season. The next kid was always willing to step up, and it was a total team effort throughout the entirety of it.”

During the 2023-24 season, Trinity would compile a 14-12 record. Defeating Medora by 52 points in the sectional opener, before downing New Washington 54-39.

The Cougars then defeated Rising Sun 67-58 to secure their fifth-straight sectional title and the first under coach Darrin Keith. Trinity would fall in the regional to Wood Memorial by 13 points.

The team had three players average double-digits in scoring throughout the season. Madison Keith led the way with 15.2 points per game, Marley Warren followed with 14.4 ppg, and Liza Froedge averaged 12.3 points per game in her senior season, passing the 1,000-point mark in the sectional.

These three Cougars were also selected to the Prep Girls Hoops Class 1A All-State teams. Keith was selected on the 4th Team All-State, while Warren was listed on the Freshmen All-State Team. Froedge was selected as an honorable mention.

Jordan Brewer also had an effective season for the Cougars, averaging 8.5 points per game, including her huge 18-point performance in the sectional final win over Rising Sun.

Madison Keith took home the MVP trophy for the varsity team. In 16 games this season, Keith recorded 14 double-doubles during the season.

Laura Roeder was awarded the Donna Sullivan Award, which is a brand-new award. The qualifications for this award include a passion for the game of basketball. A display of leadership on and off the court as well as being a role model for girls sports.

Froedge won the Cougar Award, with Bailey Bonde taking home the Most Improved for the varsity team. Warren and Roeder took home stat based awards for steals and assists. Jordan Brewer and Warren also took home the free-throw percentage award.

Trinity is also losing three seniors in Froedge, Dianna Munoz and Morgan Brewer.

“When I was first approached about this job, those three girls were my first thought,” Keith said. “I just wanted to make sure they had a fun and successful ‘senior season’. All of you are wonderful kids. We tried to make it fun and continue getting better each and every day. These will always be my first seniors as head coach.”

The JV team finished their season with an 11-7 record, defeating Lanesville, Austin and Columbus East as their big wins. Zoey Dulaney and Emerson Warren were selected as Co-MVP’s of the junior varsity team.

DeAnna Rothert was chosen as the most improved player for the Cougar JV team.

Trinity will now look to build on the past year in 2024-25, with another full season with Keith at the coaching helm.
