Applications for sports scholarships in memory of Jessica Barkman are now available.

Jessica was a 1991 graduate of Seymour High School, where she received the most valuable player award in volleyball, basketball and track during her senior year. She attended Indiana State University on a volleyball scholarship.

Barkman died in a traffic accident in Texas in 1997. She is remembered and admired for her outstanding talent and strong determination. After her death, a scholarship fund was started.

The purpose of the scholarship is to financially help girls strengthen their athletic ability by attending sports camps, play club ball, etc. The scholarships will be based on financial need, athletic ability and a coach’s recommendation.

Last year’s three recipients were Peyton Croquart, who attends Seymour Middle School; and Savanah and Taylor Kramer, who attend Immanuel Lutheran School.

Scholarship applications, due April 1, are available at Girls Inc. of Jackson County. They are also available at girlsincjackson.org.
