It’s hard to beat a team twice in one season. The Seymour Owls boys’ basketball team found out the hard way Tuesday night in the Seymour Class 4A Sectional in the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium

The Owls were unable to stay close to Jeffersonville Tuesday night and saw their season come to an end 45-27. Seymour edged the Red Devils 40-39 in a Hoosier Hills Conference game at home on Dec. 8, and the teams finished as co-champions of the HHC at 5-1.

The Owls scored the first basket of the game Tuesday night on a power move to the basket by Jaylan Johnson. The Red Devils came back to score the next 11 points to lead the rest of the night. Michael Brooks finally scored again for the Owls at the 5:20 mark.

Seymour coach Kirk Manns said, “You’ve got to give Jeffersonville all the credit in the world. They had a game plan and they stuck to it. They’ve got good size and they got good guard play.

“We got off to a rough start,” he added. “We had some open shots, they weren’t able to fall and we were climbing up-hill from the beginning.”

The Owls made only 11 of 27 shots from the floor and the Red Devils hit 20 of 36. The Owls played much better in the second period, scoring 12 points to the Red Devils’ 13.

Brady Harpe got the Owls’ offense going with a field goal at 7:32. Seymour finally scored back-to-back field goals on a 3-pointer from Harpe at 6:46, and a basket by Nathan Silcox at 4:25 that left the score 15-11.

Later in the period, Silcox hit a 3-pointer, and Johnson scored from close range, but the Owls trailed 24-16 at the half.

Any hopes the Owls had of a comeback at the start of the second half quickly went away when the Red Devils went on a 10-0 run to take a 34-16 lead.

“It snowballed on us,” Manns said of the visitors’ rally. “We gave up a couple layups and we had a couple turnovers. We were just trying to gather our thoughts and gather our composure.”

Johnson finally made a layup at 4:16 to set the score 34-18. The Red Devils held a 43-24 lead at the third period, then sat on the ball much of the fourth quarter when the Owls outscored Jeff 3-2.

Johnson topped the Owls in scoring with 11 points and tied Michael Brooks for team-high in rebounds with six.

Tre Singleton, a 6-foot-8 junior did not play against the Owls in the earlier game. Tuesday night he scored two baskets each in the first two quarters, then 10 points in the third period, including a 3-pointer, and finished with 19 points.

Manns said, “Singleton makes a big difference. He is a force inside. He’s strong, and he’s big, and you put (PJ) Douglas and (Michael) Cooper around him. Their guards move well off of him, cutting around Singleton well when he catches the ball. And they’re playing really well right now.”

Cooper added 12 points for the 16-7 Red Devils, who will play Floyd Central at 6 p.m. Friday.

The Owls finished at 18-5, and that is the most wins by a Seymour team since the 2004-05 team won 16.

“This game doesn’t define our season,” Manns said. “When the sting wears off we’ll be able to celebrate the many accomplishments that this team was able to grind through this year, and there are several of them.”

The coach spoke about the three seniors who leave the Owls program.

“I just want to give our seniors (Bret Perry, Silcox, Demetrious Collins) a lot of credit,” he said. “Bret and Ethan have been in the program for four years and we’re going to miss them. We just wish them all the best.”
