JCCT holding auditions for ‘Leading Ladies’

Jackson County Community Theatre will hold auditions for the spring production of Ken Ludwig’s “Leading Ladies” at 7 p.m. March 3 and 4 p.m. at Royal Off-the-Square Theatre in Brownstown.

In this hilarious comedy, two English Shakespearean actors, Leo and Jack, find themselves so down on their luck they are performing “Scenes from Shakespeare” on the Moose Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania.

But then, what luck. They hear dear old Florence of nearby York, Pennsylvania, is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long-lost English nephews, Max and Steve, whom she has never seen. For Jack and Leo, it is the work of an instant to turn themselves into nephews Max and Steve and grab the cash. And that’s when the complications set in.

When it turns out Max and Steve are actually nieces with unusual names, not nephews, Leo and Jack turn their acting skills into impersonating women and hilarity ensues.

Parts are available for five men and three women.

Leo Clark is a charming and quick-witted actor who takes on the role of “Maxine” to swindle his way into a fortune. Jack Gable is Leo’s long-time friend and fellow actor who must also assume a female persona to carry out the scheme. Duncan Wooley is Meg’s bumbling and endearing fiancé who becomes entangled in the scheme. Doc Myers is the local physician and friend of the family who gets caught up in the shenanigans. Butch Myers is Doc Myers’ son, who is smitten with Meg.

Meg Snider is the kind-hearted niece of the wealthy old woman the actors are trying to deceive. Audrey is the bubbly and slightly ditzy friend of Meg. Florence is the crotchety and suspicious elderly aunt of Meg.

Paul Keller will direct the show.

Auditions will be cold readings from the script. No preparation is necessary, but those trying out are asked to bring a list of dates that might conflict with rehearsals.

Show dates are April 19, 20, 21, 26, and 27. Anyone who cannot attend tryouts but would like to audition may contact JCCT at [email protected].
