MEDORA— Rising Sun outscored Medora 9-5 during the final minute to leave the Hornets’ Nest with a 51-49 win Friday night.
Medora held a 44-42 lead following a field goal by Hudson Johnson with 1:45 remaining.
The Shiners then scored back-to-back field goals and led the rest of the way.
A free throw by Nate Eliot with 6.6 seconds remaining gave the Shiners a 51-48 lead before Kacie Inscoe made 1 of 2 free throws with 4.6 seconds left to close the scoring.
The Shiners held a 6-5 lead midway through the first period before Eliot hit a 3-pointer for the Shiners, and Jaxon Nugen matched that for the Hornets.
Damian Salas also had a 3-pointer for Medora in the opening period, but the visitors held a 14-8 lead going into the second period. Turnovers hurt the Hornets throughout the first half with six in each quarter, and that enabled the Shiners to lead 23-19 at the half.
Salas had a hot hand for the Hornets at the start of the third period, and his third basket of the quarter left the Hornets trailing 29-25, and the Shiners held a 34-30 lead going into the fourth period.
A 3-point basket by Dawson Cornett with five minutes remaining left Medora trailing 39-37.
Medora finally pulled even at 42-42 on a free throw by Salas with 2:46 remaining.
Rising Sun made 10 or 14 free throws in the fourth period and 21 of 26 for the game. Medora was 6 for 9 at the line in the fourth period and 10 for 19 for the night.
Salas topped Medora with 17 points and Johnson added 13. Brody Morris topped the Shiners in scoring with 17 points and Eliot scored 12.
The rebounds were even at 31 a piece with Salas having the high for Medora with nine, while Ben Shorten had 11 for Rising Sun.
It was homecoming for Medora with senior Aaralyn Hackney being named homecoming queen. Medora had its two-game win streak stopped and fell to 8-12, and will host Eminence tonight.
