SEYMOUR

Donald F. Schroeder, 90, of Seymour, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home on February 6, 2024. Don was born on June 2, 1933, in Greensburg, Indiana, to Carl and Elizabeth Schroeder, both of whom preceded him in death. He dedicated his life to his family and community, impacting the lives of all of whom he had contact. After attending Indiana University and earning a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and later a Master’s degree in Education, Don began a career as a teacher and coach at Burney, Holton, North Vernon, and Jennings County High Schools. Over the course of those years, he became one of the most highly regarded baseball and basketball coaches in southern Indiana, winning numerous conference, sectional, and regional championships. Don is among a select group of individuals to have his number retired at Jennings County High School for baseball. In addition to teaching and coaching, Don worked part-time as an insurance salesman. He was very successful in the industry, earning yearly honors as the top part time salesman in the country. Don spoke at national conventions, sharing his knowledge to fellow sales people across the nation. An avid sportsman, Don was an active golfer and softball player for many years. He played his last softball game at age 89 and earned the respect of his teammates and opponents alike. Don was always proud of the four National Championships that he and his teammates won while he spent winters in Florida. Those who played with or against him considered him one of the toughest competitors that they had ever known. Don loved spending time with his family, attending and participating in sporting events, and conversing with friends, former players, and colleagues. He had a strong zest for life and instilled his enthusiasm into those who were near him. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Pat; children Mike, Gary (Rhonda), Jeff (Jenny), and Greg; eight grandchildren, Matt, Chandra, Haley, Braden, Emily, Isabel, Jake, and Olivia; two great-grandchildren, Maggie Jayne and Case. Funeral services were conducted at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Friday, February 9, 2024, and the burial was done at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Ambrose Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society. Please share memories and condolences at www.BurkholderFuneralChapel.com.
