Cougars dominate Medora to advance to sectional semifinal

NEW WASHINGTON — It was a one-sided Jackson County matchup on Tuesday evening with Trinity Lutheran facing off with Medora in the New Washington Class A Sectional 62.

The Cougars took control from the beginning, leading to a lopsided 73-21 victory over the Hornets.

Trinity head coach Darrin Keith spoke on the outcome with Medora on Tuesday.

“I thought we came out and played our game,” Keith said. “I think we did a great job of executing our game plan.”

Marley Warren kicked things off for the Cougars with a three-point shot to take an early 3-0 lead. Trinity jumped Medora passes constantly throughout the game, which led to easy layups and baskets for the Cougars.

Laura Roeder got the loose ball and scored with ease to make it 7-0 with 6 minutes left in the first period. Liza Froedge then scored another basket, making it 9-0 before accomplishing a huge feat.

Froedge hit the basket and the Trinity bench and crowd went nuts as Froedge passed the 1,000-point mark as a Cougar.

She became just the fourth player to achieve that number for the Cougars, joining Bailey Tabeling (2,234), Sydney Jaynes (1,598) and Brittany Tabeling (1,593) as the only Lady Cougars to accomplish this. Froedge was asked about accomplishing the amazing feat.

“It means a lot to me,” Froedge said. “I played with Sydney and Bailey, and it’s awesome to be included alongside those great players.”

Warren then hit a basket before hitting another 3. Before you knew it, it was 16-0 in favor of the Cougars.

Aaralyn Hackney ended the scoring drought for Medora with a three to make it 18-3. Then Froedge hit one for the Cougars to make it a 21-3 game.

The Cougars took a 32-3 lead after the first quarter, setting up the dominant performance. Trinity commanded the game from the get-go, not allowing a single inch to the Hornets. The Cougars were up 36-3 with 6:45 left in the first half.

The Cougars held a 55-3 lead at intermission with no signs of slowing down.

The Hornets began the second half with a Madison Reece basket to make it 55-5. Brelee Underwood banked in a three-pointer with 2:40 left to make it 63-8.

Trinity held a 67-12 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Underwood sparked the Medora offense in the second half, hitting a few long-range shots along with layups to keep scoring for the Hornets. It wouldn’t matter, as the Cougars had a massive advantage throughout the game.

After battling until the end, Medora would still trail by 50 points with a minute left in the game. Trinity would hang on to defeat the Hornets 73-21 to advance to the semifinals.

Froedge led the team with 20 points, while Bailey Bonde chipped in 14. Warren had 12 with Zoey Dulaney scoring eight for Trinity Lutheran.

Underwood scored 10 points for Medora with Jenna Bowers adding seven in the loss.

Froedge was asked about the next matchup with New Washington in the sectional semifinal.

“I’m looking forward to playing again,” she said. “We have to play our game and be strong on both sides of the ball.”

Keith was also asked about the next game against the Mustangs.

“They’re a good team and have some quality players. We will just have to play defense,” Keith said. “That game will be decided on who can come out and play better on that side of the ball.”

The semifinal match will take place Friday at 7:30 p.m. at New Washington High School. If the Cougars can win that game, they’ll play in the sectional title game Saturday evening at the same location.
