The public is invited to attend the February art show at Perceptions Yoga, Mindfulness and Art in Vernon featuring the work of Executive Director Karen Chilman.

The show opens with a public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 2.

On display will be more than 50 pieces of art Chilman created over the past 45 years. Artwork on canvas, paper and wood and other media will be shown. Many have never been exhibited before, and most will be for sale to the public.

“Most work I do now is commissioned, like live wedding paintings, pet portraits, some people portraits, home and landscapes,” Chilman said. “I’m busy with teaching yoga and art, and I don’t have a lot of time to create, so I’ve been pulling works saved through the years. When I have the urge to create, it’s often flowers, landscapes or shapes and colors that my mind sees.”

A retired public school art teacher, Chilman co-founded the nonprofit organization with friend and co-worker Charlind Evans in 2018. Each month, a local artist has the opportunity to show and sell their work.

“In this show, there is quite a variety of images, from local landmarks to abstract expressionism,” said Chilman, who also is a guiding teacher. “I love color and light. That may be the only commonality in the works if there is one. Mostly, I create for the love of creation and the love of art of all kinds.”

Perceptions is located across from the Jennings County Courthouse. Galleries will be open in February from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays or by appointment by messaging 812-528-1313 or emailing [email protected].
