William E. “Bill” Sweeney, of Brownstown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Hoosier Christian Village of Brownstown, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86 years old.

Bill was born on August 26, 1937, in Ewing to Orval (Bob) and Marjorie (Malloy) Sweeney, both of whom preceded him in death. On October 19, 1956, at Brownstown First Baptist Church, he married the love of his life, Mary Patricia (Pat) McCory, and she preceded him in death on April 6, 2019. Bill was an active member of the Brownstown First Baptist Church since 1964. He held several positions and was a deacon until the time of his death.

After graduating from Brownstown High School, Bill served in the Indiana National Guard. Thereafter, Bill was a Brick Mason in central and northern Indiana. In 1964, William moved his family from Greenwood back to Brownstown and began working at Zabel’s Furniture Store as a furniture repairman until his retirement in 1999. William was a member of the Brownstown Town Council for 30 years and served on the Brownstown Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years. He was a member of the high school football chain gang for 37 years. In 2011, Bill was inducted into the Brownstown High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also a lifelong member of the Hickory Hills Golf Club, and part of the McDonald’s breakfast group.

William loved watching Brownstown Athletics and was a loyal fan for over 40 years. He cherished spending time with his family and worshipping the Lord.

Survivors include sons William Douglas (Debra) Sweeney, Mark Sweeney, and daughters Kimberly Sweeney and Cathi (Steve) Wheeler; five grandchildren: Danielle Sweeney, Nathan (Samantha) Sweeney, Stephanie (Eric) Austin, Kelly (Erick) Hoevener, and Chelsea (Mark) Schmidt. Eight great-grandchildren; Skylee Murphy, Annasun and Landon Austin, Braley and Hadley Hoevener, Hunter and Shelby Sweeney, Hayes and Wrenley Schmidt. Bill is also survived by brothers Kenny Sweeney and John (Cindy) Sweeney, and sister-in-law Judith Robertson McCory.

William was preceded in death by brothers Claude Sweeney, Norval (Vicki) Sweeney, and sister Sharon Sweeney.

Funeral Services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church of Brownstown on Saturday December 23, 2023, at 12:00 pm with Pastor Darrin Wan officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery of Brownstown.

Friends may visit at First Baptist Church of Brownstown prior to the service starting at 10:00 am until time of the service.

Memorials may be written in Bill’s name to the First Baptist Church of Brownstown.
