Serving others

Thumbs up to those recently recognized for their service to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities by The Arc of Jackson County. The list includes Grace Kruse and Rilee Robinson, educators of the year; Suzann Sorensen and Jim Murphy, paraprofessionals of the year; Culver’s of Seymour and 4 Corners Employment Services Inc., employers of the year; Zach Spicer and Jackson Legg, community service award; and Emma Callahan and Lisa Whitson, Anne Baxter Caregiver of the Year. The Arc of Jackson County is a nonprofit organization that advocates for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Shopping with cops

Thumbs up to the members of Fraternal Order of Police Donald M. Winn Lodge 108, who recently treated 105 kids from 42 families with something extra for Christmas during the annual Cops and Kids program at Walmart Supercenter in Seymour. A related thumbs up to everyone who contributed to that program through the lodge’s fundraisers.

Youth of the Month

Thumbs up to Brownstown Central High School senior Audrey Scarlett, who recently was named the Brownstown Exchange Club Youth of the Month for November. Scarlett, the daughter of Anne and Steve Scarlett, plans to study psychology at Indiana University after she graduates from high school.

Hornets honored

Thumbs up to the Medora R.E.D..Hornets of the Month for November. They are sixth-grader Sydnie Elliott, senior Eli Lane and sophomore Greer Brown. Each month during the school year, three students are recognized for their responsibility, empathy and determination (R.E.D.). 

Long-lasting

Thumbs up to Paul and Doris Jewett, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 28. The Seymour couple, who have a daughter, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, were married on Nov. 28, 1963, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Seymour.

Braves of the Month

Thumbs up to Brownstown Elementary School first-grader Elliott Moore, Brownstown Central Middle School sixth-grader Rylee Emmert and Brownstown Central High School senior Kelis East. The three recently were recognized as Braves of the Month for November during a Brownstown Central Community School Corp. board of school trustees meeting.

Distinguished service

Thumbs up to Laverne Carr, who recently received the 2023 Distinguished Customer Service Award during the Big I Indiana annual convention. Carr is a senior commercial account manager with Shepherd Insurance in Seymour, where she has been employed for 36 years. The award recognizes an employee in a Big I Indiana member agency for their loyalty, dedication to their job, professional development and industry involvement. Individuals responsible for assisting producers, placement of agency accounts, customer service and account development for claims handling and service are eligible.
