Bull Dogs edge Lady Owls on last-second free thows

COLUMBUS— Talk about a wild finish.

Seymour slowly climbed its way back into Tuesday’s girls basketball at Columbus North.

The Owls tied it up, but it was Kaylie Harmon that was fouled on the 3-point shot attempt with 9-tenths of a second left.

Harmon converted all three to allow the Bull Dogs to escape with a 60-57 victory. It’s now eight straight victories for North after an 0-2 start.

The Bull Dogs led 55-45 midway through the fourth quarter when the Seymour charge occurred. Kenzie Gagner hit two 3-pointers to capped off a 12-2 run to tie at 57-57 with 5.7 seconds left in the game.

Following a timeout, Harmon then grabbed the inbounds pass and dribbled down the court for a possible 3-point shot. However, she was fouled on the play. She sank all three free throws to seal the game.

Harmon finished with a game-high 27 points on five 3-pointers and 8 for 8 from the line.

“Kaylie has been very consistent for us all year long. We lean on her a lot, and tonight, she came through,” North coach Brett White said. “She made some shots early on that got her going, and then she made some good decision down the stretch, as well.”

For Seymour coach Jason Longmeier, the fourth quarter comeback was too-little, too-late.

“We waited too late to fight. I thought there were opportunities early on were we just weren’t playing at a pace that we need to play at,” Longmeier said. “I thought late we fought, but you can’t fight for eight, 10, 12 minutes, it’s got to be 32 minutes.”

North (8-2) came out with a lot of energy to start the game. The Bull Dogs put the pressure on the Owls (6-6) early defensively.

The Bull Dogs helped themselves at the free throw line, converting 6 of 8 to build a double-digit lead. A 3-pointer from Harmon capped off a 12-2 North run to end the first quarter with a 17-6 lead.

Seymour found a brief spark with a couple turnovers that converted to easy transition layup at the other end to cut the deficit to 19-12. Both teams traded points the rest of the quarter with the Bull Dogs leading 28-20 at the half.

The Lady Owls prepare for a quick turnaround, facing off with HHC foe in Floyd Central on Thursday evening, hosting the Highlanders at 7:30 p.m.

The JV girls team will start at 6 p.m.
