Making it a mile

Thumbs up to everyone who participated in the inaugural Museum Mile on Nov. 11 at Freeman Municipal Airport in Seymour. Runway 5/23 was shut down for the event, which raised funds for the Freeman Army Airfield Museum. The purpose of the museum is to preserve, protect and display artifacts from the World War II era when Freeman Army Airfield served as a training base for the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Standing out

Thumbs up to the Brownstown Central High School and Trinity Lutheran High School volleyball players named to the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association All-State team. First team members are Brownstown’s Sophie Wischmeier and Trinity’s Laura Roeder and Addison Darlage. Second team members are Brave Jaydynn Yeadon and Cougar Carson Bowling. A related thumbs up to Brownstown Central coach Jennifer Shade, who was named the association’s Coach of the Year, and one of Shade’s assistant coaches — and daughter — Abbi Young, who was named an Indiana High School Athletic Association education champion during the tournament.

Braves of the Month

Thumbs up to the Brownstown Central Community School Corp. Braves of the Month for October. They are seventh-grader Jalyn Huddleston, senior Audrey Scarlett and fifth-grader Brantley Stevens.

Labor of love

Thumbs up to everyone in the area who has packed or is packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, including the group at Tampico Baptist Church, which recently packed 89 shoeboxes. The Samaritan’s Purse project has delivered 270 million gift-filled shoeboxes to boys and girls around the world since it was established in 1993.

Outstanding service

Thumbs up to Brittany Wayt, who was one of 99 employees from American Senior Communities across Indiana who were honored with the firm’s Quest for Excellence award for their outstanding service to patients and residents. Wayt is the business office manager at Seymour Crossing.

Warming hearts — and toes

Thumbs up to everyone who contributed to the Warm Hearts Warm Toes project. This year’s project — the 12th — was organized by Becca Hattabaugh and her mother, Becky Wilson. More than 150 pairs of shoes were distributed to Brownstown and Crothersville students. Again this year, the project received financial support from Society of St. Vincent de Paul, an international Catholic organization that helps the poor. Plus, they received donations from The Peoples Bank, where Hattabaugh works, and individuals contributed their own money.
