Kay Marie Downing, 89, of Seymour, IN passed away October 20, 2023, at the Lutheran Community Home. She was born on September 8, 1934, in Covington, Indiana to Earl and Marie Allison. She met her husband, Don Downing, on a blind date at Indiana University where she was a Delta Delta Delta and he was a Delta Upsilon. They married on December 23, 1956. Kay was a Home Economics teacher and enjoyed teaching the art of running a home and entertaining, which she enjoyed throughout her life. Kay was a teacher and guidance counselor for over 30 years in several local community schools as well as serving as a case worker for the Jackson County Welfare Department. She enjoyed golf, snow skiing, traveling and she was an avid fan of Indiana University football and basketball. She sewed all her life and made many of her own festive dresses as well as holiday clothes for her daughters. She needlepointed many memories that we now will cherish forever. Kay served as President of the Indiana Optometric Association Women’s Auxiliary and the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her brother, Ken Allison of Houston, TX; son, Dr. Barry Downing (Jennifer) of Seymour IN; her daughter Alyson Hunteman of Phoenix, AZ; and her daughter Carolyn Tracy of Venice, CA. She had 9 grandchildren, Leah Watson, Tyler Downing, Meghan Kapfhammer, Daniel Willaert, Jack Willaert, Dagny Tracy, Emma Tracy, Zebediah Hunteman, and Lula Hunteman and 12 great grandchildren.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, of 41 years, Don Downing.

Friends and family may meet at Voss and Sons Funeral Service and Crematory, 316 N Chestnut St Seymour, IN at 10AM, Wednesday October 25th, 2023, for a brief gathering before going in procession to Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at 10:45AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions to go to the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
