County unemployment dips to 2.8% in September

Jackson County’s unemployment rate stood at 2.8% in September, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s latest report released Monday.

Overall, 22,288 county residents were on the job during the month. That’s 734 less than in September 2022 when 23,022 county residents were working. The jobless rate at that time was 2.2%.

The September rate, which is preliminary, was 0.3% lower than the final 3.1% rate for August.

The number of county residents reporting they were looking for work in September was 632, compared to 528 who were looking for work during the same month a year earlier.

The county’s labor force was 22,920 in September, which is 630 less than labor force of 23,550 during the same month in 2022.

The county’s unemployment rate for September was lower than the state’s rate of 3.3% and the national rate of 3.6%.

Other nearby counties and their preliminary unemployment rates for September were Bartholomew, 2.8%; Brown, 3.1%; Jennings, 3.2%; Lawrence, 3.6%; Monroe, 3.1%; Scott, 3.7%; and Washington, 3%.

Daviess County had the lowest rate in the state at 2.3% in September, and Lake County had the highest at 4.8%.
