Owls battle Panthers in final regular-season matchup, travel to Columbus East for sectional

The final week of the regular season is here with Seymour preparing for its toughest task of the football season.

The Owls will travel to face Bloomington South on Friday at 7 p.m.

Seymour comes off of a 53-14 win over New Albany with the Panthers ranked near the top of Class 5A and dominating Brebeuf Jesuit 51-26.

Last year, the Panthers defeated the Owls 42-13 to end the regular season. Seymour head coach Tyson Moore knows it will be a tough challenge.

“They’re a great football team and the best we will face all year long. They do a lot of great things on both sides of the football,” Moore said. “They are also a very experienced football team with a lot of returning players. It’s going to take a lot of preparation and execution to compete with those guys.”

Moore was asked about his quarterback in Bret Perry, who continues his historic season for the Owls.

Perry broke the single-season passing yard and touchdown records, set by Ross Wiethoff in 2001. The record now sits at 2,900 yards and 35 touchdown passes and counting.

Perry will continue to add to this record.

“Add it to the long list of records this kid has broken this year,” Moore said. “It’s a product of his hard work and leadership as a quarterback on offense. It’s a testament to him and the guys around him who have made plays each week. He has grown a lot, and it’s a testament to the work they all put in.”

The sectional draw also was released over the weekend with the Owls getting another chance to play Columbus East. Seymour defeated the Olympians 41-26 on Sept. 1. The rematch will take place at Columbus East High School on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.

Moore knows it will be tough to defeat the same team twice in the same season.

“We knew there was a good chance we would draw someone we already played,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity to play Columbus East again. We’re focusing on Bloomington South at the moment. It’s something we can’t focus on at the moment, but we will have to be ready to go when the time comes.”
