Hersey Gene Mangels, 87, of Greensburg, formerly of Seymour, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023. He was born September 22, 1936 in Leadville, Colorado, the son of Gilbert Mangels and Ella Baack Mangels. He graduated from Sidney High School, Concordia University, and received his masters degree from Indiana State University. He began a 44-year career as an educator in Vincennes before moving to Seymour Immanuel Lutheran School where he retired in 2002 after 34 years of teaching and coaching.

He taught several grades and coached football, basketball and golf.

While in Vincennes, he met (Bette) Joan Reitmeyer and they were married August 23, 1959. She preceded him in death July 6, 2018, after nearly 59 years of marriage.

Hersey was a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed golfing every day the weather permitted, and was active in bowling leagues, Immanuel men’s chorus, the Seymour High School Football program, and many Immanuel Lutheran Church committees and boards.

Hersey is survived by his son, Scott (Janice) of Greensburg, and granddaughters, Molly and Emily. He is also survived by his brothers, Jerry (Bette) Mangels of Nebraska, and Ken (Carolyn) Mangels of Arizona, his brother-in-law, Dan (Lisa) Reitmeyer of Vincennes and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit with Hersey’s family from 10 am until service time at 12 pm Monday, October 2, 2023 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 605 S. Walnut Street, Seymour, Indiana 47274 with Pastor Ralph Blomenberg, Pastor Philip Bloch, Pastor James Rodriguez, Pastor Will Fredstrom and Pastor Andrew Currao officiating.
